Vintage Waistcoats

£2 - Charity Shop
Hello there!!
It has been far too long!
Today we are delving in to my vintage collection. It may not be big, but it's definitely growing. The topic of the day, is - waistcoats!
I am a massive fan of the vintage waistcoat. It literally goes with everything in my wardrobe and (as you can you tell if you often read my blog) I wear them a lot.
My love of waistcoats began when the trend of the longline waistcoat and sleeveless blazer arrived in the magazines. It was one of the number one trends that looked amazing and yet I couldn't afford. So I did what any struggling student would do - I raided the charity shops.
I found the first waistcoat in a charity shop in West Wickham. It was coming up to Christmas time and I wanted to find some more sophisticated items. Thankfully, I managed to find this little goodie. Not only was it my size (a very rare occurrence), but it was also cheap, black and longline. (I will add, that I'm rather lucky when finding longer layering items, as I'm short bodied). From that day on it became my go to piece. As you can see from the photos above, I wore it in different ways. From a classic dark look for an interview, to an all black evening look and not to mention pairing it with an amazing metallic skirt. It proves that an item as simple as a black waistcoat, can be used in so many ways.
The second waistcoat was not only an absolute bargain from my local charity shop, but it is simply divine. Although from the outset, the predominant colour is brown, it does have a tendency to change in natural light. The velvet and the vintage pattern just screams 1970's to me. I also think it has a certain 1920's feel to it (but then I'm absolutely obsessed with that decade). I like wearing this waistcoat in more causal outfits, as I feel it has a luxury feel to it. It's a statement piece in itself, so I like to pair it with basics. It's one of my favourite things in my ever growing wardrobe.
I like collecting vintage waistcoats. Another waistcoat which I will provably never wear unless I go to Las Vegas, is a colourful sequinned Vegas inspired design. It is literally my favourite thing EVER! I found it in a charity shop at uni and I'm so happy that I did. It's a unique piece that no one else will have and although it was £7, I still think it's a bargain considering the detail in the piece.
Here are a few tips I have for finding vintage waistcoats:
1. Expect the unexpected - you will fall in love with designs you may not have thought you would.
2. Charity Shops - this is where I have found all of my waistcoats. They are a great place to find cheap unique pieces that have had previous lives and are looking for a new home.
3. Size - be careful when it comes to sizing on waistcoats. They may look big enough, but you need to factor in the fact that they are vintage and sizing has changed. Also, if you are larger busted like myself, than certain styles can be unflattering.
4. Vintage Outlet - looking in the sale sections of vintage shops are amazing for finding one off special pieces. They are very cheap and I can guarantee that they are unlike anything you have seen before.
5. Wearability - the waistcoat doesn't have to be on trend or be classed as 'wearable'. If you love it, then why not rock it while popping to Asda, you might be surprised about how much it works.
6. Just have fun with it!!!!
I hope this post helps you with your search for amazing one of a kind waistcoats. I will say that I'm definitely not an expert, this is just my opinion but you're welcome to take on any of the tips. Let's see if you become as obsessed with them as I have!
Thank you all for reading and I hope your love of vintage will grow.
Until next time…
